My friend Wayne Nunnely (1952-2021)...
The Nunnely brothers have been friends of mine from childhood in Monrovia CA.
Eddie (Speedie) a year older than me and Wayne, two years younger.
We played football in the street and later (below) at Monrovia high school 1968,
Citrus Junior College with Eddie going on athletic scholarship to Utah State
and (below) Wayne and I to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas 1971.
After graduating Wayne would go into coaching which lead him into the National Football League (see article).
Our friendship continued to grow over the years. He was a regular attendee to watch the Super Bowl with old friends who gathered at my home. Fifteen or more guys who have known each other since kindergarten in Monrovia-Duarte. Imagine for the last 40 plus years all the guys sitting around watching, chatting and chewing having known each other for the last 66 years.

That is what it would have been this past SB Sunday but Coronavirus 19 shut us down. We look forward to getting together next year, Lord willing.
While Wayne was coaching for the San Diego Chargers I had many opportunities to attend their home games. Quick sketching as usual, I caught Wayne talking strategy on the sidelines during the action. I included this sketch in my book Quick Sketching with Ron Husband. Not only am I concerned with the story telling pose but a recognizable likeness of the person or persons being sketched. We are not used to seeing ourselves as others see us. How we stand, our posture, our walk, our gestures are not revealed in the head shot we see in the bathroom mirror as we ready for the outside world. We do not recognize ourselves, but others do, as Wayne's daughter Amber did. He sent me this email highlighting this point.
Thank you for all the great memories my friend.
Until next time...

I am so sorry for your loss. You have honored him with your illustration. Now when I see that image in my copy of your book, I'll know who that is; I'll know his name.
ReplyDeleteChristie, appreciate your comments and hoping the book is encouraging your drawing talent to sketch more.
DeleteYes! The book does encourage me. I was quick-sketching on the train this week. And although I can see all the things I get wrong, I can also see when I get something a bit right. I keep telling myself: Just keep doing it.
